Gear box worn

Post by oldgu »

Finally got a chance to disassemble the manual gear box on my 65 D100. The short shaft (pitman arm goes on one end, adj screw and lock nut on the other) looks to have about .010 wear on about half of the outside diameter where it makes contact with the bushing, end opposite pitman arm. If the original box was neglected enough to have that kind of wear, who knows what else is out of spec. After reading all the similar posts related to steering issues, any recommendations on where to buy another compete box? Not quite ready to drop 6 to 7 on a new cpp system. Thanks.

Back in the 70s we had a 1965 D100 that the steering box quit working. The recirculating balls were worn so small that they wouldn't drive any more.

Thanks for the info. I checked Rock Auto. Didn't see it in the steering catagory...

Two different styles?/ manufacturer for a 1970 I noticed. But you send yours in to get it rebuilt by them. And who knows who is doing the work.
When I get mine rebuilt it will be by Bud. (powerwagon54)

I'd much rather have Bud's hands in my box than a 12 year old kid's in China..... :study

After further review, my box might not even meet the core stage. The end of the pitman shaft has a step in it, along with significant wear on the gear teeth, both sets. I believe all the parts can be replaced, rebuilt, but it might be more cost effective to get a good core to rebuild. Thanks for all the replies.
