How many balls in a Saginaw 525 box?

Post by JLeather »

I'm rebuilding my steering box as per the walkthrough in the tech section. When I disassembled it I counted 50 balls, just like the one in the tech section, but there's a sizeable gap in the ball tubes when I reassemble it. Enough room for another ball or two per channel. I've reassembled the ballnut 4 or 5 times and each time it's the same.
Is that normal? Should I continue to add balls until there isn't room for another one, or is the gap intentional for some reason?

Your good there should be lots of slop between the balls. These saginaw boxes were supposed to be packed with white lithium grease not gear oil. People wonder why they leak or why they look so cruddy apon disassembly. It's because the grease dried up or sombody put gear oil in with the grease. Assemble it with white lithium and pack the case with it and you should be golden
