Smoking Parking Brake

Post by Lobster »

I got off the freeway and my parking brake was smoking. It is the drum style on my 64 D200. The brake was released while driving. I adjusted it about a 500 miles ago and the drum was machined about 1000 miles back the lining was also replaced. When the brake cooled off I pulled the lever and it did not seem over adjusted. I'm puzzled and concerned since I'm about to take the truck on a 2000 mile trip.

It was hot, it was smoking, it was dragging, it is "over adjusted".

I agree with your conclusion. But it was fine with this adjustment for months. Is is possible that the adjustment worked itself tighter or something is binding?

do you hav ethe lock wire in the bolt on the drivers side of the band? that will back off if not held with lock wire. sometimes people lose the bolt with the hole in it and put a regular bolt in.. might work might not that way. Also your cable could be sticking slightly
