seized brakes / wheel removal. direction needed.

Post by JoeD500 »

Hello all,

I'll try to keep this short. My '74 Dodge D500 (2 ton flat deck truck) has been sitting a while as I've been recovering from a motorcycle accident. Now that im back on my feet, I find the front brakes are both seized solid. She's parked on softy dirt too so I can't just throw it in gear and bust them loose and I don't want to pay to get a tow truck either.

So I have pulled the front wheel off, but have had zero luck in budging the brake drums off. Does this 'fix' just require a bigger hammer? And are there any "best practices" or "tricks" I should know about to help things along ? .

Secondly, the hub bearing cap. How the hell do you remove that thing ? I would have imagined it wouldn't be too tight but again - no luck. Do I need a specialty tool for this ?

Any input would be greatly. ....greatly appreciated.

Bearing cap is threaded, use a big wrench. Heat the drum with a torch. It will enlarge and the heat also loosens the rust bond.

Thank you. I know that's kinda "seized brake removal 101" but figured I'd get a second opinion on it. Sucks as I don't have a torch so I'll need to rent or find someone who does. Thanks a lot man.

Just get a small hand held. Their not that expensive and will do the job just fine. Be sure to use map gas it burns hotter.

Have you tries backing brake shoes off. If your 74 is like my 70 D500 you will find 2 adjusters on each backing plate.

This is perfect. See I would have assumed I'd for sure need an oxy-acetalene set up to heat them. I'll definitely try hand held first then.

And honestly I don't know if it has adjusters on the backing plate :pale . But I'm going to check now before I go further!.

That's great input. Very much appreciated gents.

It will absolutely have adjusters. U will never get enough heat out of mapp for a D500 drum.

Wow long did this D500 set? Did you try to open bleeder(s) first?

It hasn't sat a terrible long time. I'd say last was not* seized and moving just under 1 year ago. And no!!. also have not tried opening the bleeder valves !. Will definitely give it a go these days off and update. Thanks again all !

I 2nd trying opening the bleeders. bad brake hoses, bad brake booster or master can cause that situation. usually its a hose though
