8 lug to 5 lug... Worth it?!

Post by Creepjohnny »

Hey guys. So on my 71 d200 I have the 16.5 rims 8 lug set up with Dana 60 rear. But I have a really nice set of 15" 5 lugs, that would look gorgeous on the truck. I've seen on some threads that I can swap spindles out for the front end and change to 5 lug, or better yet, upgrade to front disc brakes and change to 5 lug as well, which is a very real option for me.
On the Dana 60, is there a way to keep it and change to 5 lugs to match?
I've seen a few different threads on front disc set ups, what seems like the best one to use? And (obviously) the best cost effective one! And how can I convert to rear end 5 lug easily?
thank u!

Rear end option is change out for a 5 bolt style(9 1/4,8 3/4,8 1/4) or have a custom built and expensive Dana 60 5 bolt.

I'll keep an eye out for another rear to swap. Would be nice to have higher gears than 4.10.
I have access to a 8 3/4 rear out of another 71 d100. It's a 318,727 setup. I'm thinking that should be a clean swap, hopefully the driveshaft length is the same so I don't have to change that too

Ive don the swap before. Its been a while, but I think everything was a bolt on. I left the 3/4 springs and swapped out complete axles. I didn't shorten the driveshaft.

Thanks slick. I maybe doing the swap after all. Cheaper tires, better rear ratio plus I like the look of the 5 lug wheels. I'll post more when I get around to it. Gotta order up some disc brakes soon!
