Newer 18 -20 Ram 2500 Wheels on my 65 D200

Post by 40YearOldFury »

Hey all,
Been a while since I've worked on my truck. The new babies and all I have just so little time. I have a 65 D200 and need new wheels and tires. I am looking to see if anyone has used any of the 2011-2016 wheels on their trucks. Anyone with pictures or technical information please post. I have seen some 2000-2006 but those are not big enough with my setup.
I have a 3" drop axle from Sid's on the front and also have front disks. I need to go with something 17" or larger to get the safe scrub line. Also with the disk brakes a 16" steel will not clear the calipers so more of an added reason for going with a bigger wheel.
I am not opposed to running 1/4" to 3/4" spacers to get the correct backspacing. Some of the new 18' to 20" would look great on my truck. I am also looking at running a lower profile tire and bring the ride down another inch or two. I am currently running a 16" steel aftermarket wheel with a very tall tire...like over 31" tall, sorry can't remember the exact size. I know I will have to swap out the transmission speedometer gear but no big deal.
Thanks all for any information or pictures.

Good to see you posting. Wish I could help. I feel like I finally got into truck work when mine were born and somehow I have been able to get some work done.

Good luck with the search. Have you thought about maybe a larger diameter stock appearing wheel? Someone has to make a 17-18 Steel appearing wheel..... :thinking

I have thought about steel wheels but steel wheels that are 17" or larger are hard to find used or even for a reasonable price. Here is how the truck looks now and some wheels I have found that might look pretty good.

Now wondering if the rear hub will fit into the caps of the newer wheels...Any thoughts or opinions?

Isn't there a lot of back spacing on the newer wheels? So will the tire stick outside the fender or the opposite? What wheels are in the last post?

Yes, most modern wheels have more backspacing than older style wheels so this will put the tire further inside the wheel well.

Those are nice looking...I'm liking the looks of a 20" on our trucks. I landed a set of the 20" from a 2014 2500 and the backspacing is off but I plan on running spacers to correct the issue. Actually they are more of adapters that bolt onto the hub face then wheel bolts on to the adapter. The factory 20" are 8" wheels. From what I have read it looks like factory backspace is 4.5". What backspace are your wheels and what is the width? Any rubbing with the 285/50r20s? Some say the drag link (left side) rubs a little with wider tires. Currently I am running 235/85r16 31.73 tall 9.25" wide and they clear just fine with no limits or rubbing at all. I also have a drop axle and springs removed resulting in about a 5 or 6" drop. I was looking at the 235/55r20...I want a shorter sidewall and am not concerned with the speedometer being off, all I'll have to do is swap the speedo gear. Thanks for your input!
