not a Saginaw 525 steering box

Post by coelcanth »

the truck is a 1969 D100

if Dodge stopped using the Saginaw 525 consistently around 1968, what did they use after that ?

I have yet to find a casting number on my box, but it does not appear to be the Saginaw detailed in the rebuild thread..
my box has a plate with 4 bolts opposite the pitman shaft and another plate held on with four bolts opposite the steering column..

is rebuilding this one a pretty similar process ? is it possible to find a kit for it ? what model is it and who made it ?

thanks for any help

Hmm mm could be..
It does look sort of like the second or third one down on the page:

372 (YSD,Y5J), 376 (35D, 35J), 378, 402 (26D, 26J), 408 Series Ross/Gemmer/TRW

Does that ring a bell for anyone else ?

In the meantime i'll scrape some more of the oil crud off my box and look for a number so I can give this shop a call...

you can replace it with the saginaw. Much better box and parts are available.

I am not at all opposed to switching to a Saginaw if it's an upgrade, especially since I can do the rebuild while keeping the truck driveable...

But are there any specific reasons on why the Saginaw box is a better choice ??

And if i'm searching for one, is there a specific model or number of the 525 that fits a sweptline or will they all work ?

Thanks for the help

Not sure why I neglected to check there in the first place,
But my manual id's the D100 box as a Ross model 24J worm and roller type

Seems like parts are not too easily available but still not impossible to find
Preload adjustment is by shimming the cover.. sounds like a pain

But now Ive found a lightly used saginaw with no play in it so maybe I will just swap that in and do a rebuild later
