Rear Axle Bearings

Post by louser »

I am getting ready to order the parts to re-do my 8.75" rear end on my '65 d100. On Rockauto a lot of the parts say "except flange axle or w/o flange axle. I am a little confused by this. Is it referring to the most outer portion that slips over the nuts to secure the axle into place?

There were 2 different 8.75 rear axle assemblies. Old time that secures the brake drum via a huge nut on a tapered shaft end. Modern that the drum just slips off the wheel studs, which is a "flanged" axle.

Supposedly 1964 was the last model year for tapered axles, but if you have an early 4 headlight with round taillights 65... the factory would have used up any remaining tapered axle versions before the line went "modern".

If it looks like this at the rear wheel...Image...you have an old style tapered axle. This one is a factory 1949 but they did not change much through end of tapered production.
If I didn't build it, it ain't mine.

1949 Dodge B1B-108; 1969 D100-128; 72 Super Beetle; and a bunch of others...
