Front wheel bearing dust caps.

Post by lunacy »

I am redoing the bearings/brakes on my 65 D-100 and ordered all my parts from Rockauto. Got the dust caps in and they are too small 1-9/16" O.D.. The one old cap i have is 1-3/4" O.D. (measured with ruler, not 100% precise) I searched on Dorman website and found some 1-25/32" caps, slightly larger that I am going to try to use. Looking around at O reilly and NAPA, they list the 1-9/16" size cap as well.

I was just curious if anyone else has come across this problem or if my truck just has abnormally large hubs.

I have on a couple occasions, what I did was take the old with me. On D100's you will wind up with one that is a little deeper but will fit. Jim

I'm experiencing this exact problem right now. I ordered one from Rock Auto (the 1 9/16ths unit) and it's way too small. Near as I can figure the correct part # is a Dorman/HELP 13996, but I haven't tested the theory yet. I've got one of those on order now, so I'll keep you posted on if it fits, haha!

Kind of irritated, though. The wrong cap cost me $5 with shipping, but to send it back would cost me $7. So I'm kind of stuck with it now. I emailed Rock Auto to tell them they've got the wrong listing, but not sure if they'll do anything for me or not.

Update-
Dorman 13996 was a touch too small. I'm going to stop at the parts store and look at a Dorman 13973 next, but it may end up being too big. If it is, I'll take a pipe expander to the 13966 and bump it out a couple of extra 32nds to get it to fit, because it really is that close.

First improvisation attemp: 13996- 1.813 outer diameter (ever so slightly too small)
Next attempt: 13973 - 1.97 outer diameter- may end up being too big.

Will keep you posted.

Could be worse; at least your life's story isn't "just a touch too small"

Well Crap. The 13973 part # did end up being too large.
I ended up having to take a pipe expander to the 13996 (fortunately I have one that's for 1 1/8th exhaust pipe that just barely fit deep enough to work) and expanding it a tiny bit at a time until I could get it to wedge into place. It still wasn't a perfect fit, though (the raised ring around the base wasn't flush with the drum). So I ended up cleaning up the outside lip of the brake drum with some sand paper (just enough to get some fresh metal) and I put a couple drops of red thread locker where the dust cap met the drum, just as insurance.

We'll see, I guess. Seems like it should work, but I'd rather have had a nice flush fit like on the passenger side.
