67 D200 rear brakes/axles?

Post by OlRed »

OK, got the fronts apart, going to order pads and cylinders for them. Went to do the rears and got lost. Looks like I need to pull the axle to get the hub off. Does this require getting into the differential to remove a clip or anything? Also, are the pads front and rear the same? Parts guys book says 12 1/8" drum diam. 2" pad width front and rear. Thought I read they were different somewhere. Looks like I can re-pad/cylinder and re brake line the whole truck for around $200. Not too bad.

undo the center hub bolts and the axle will slide out. under it theres a big nut that holds the hub on. theres a locking washer with tabs youll have to unfold to get it all apart, so id recommend hosing it all out with some break cleaner so you can see all the parts under the grease before you go too far. be sure to repack everything and get the hub preload right when you go back in. i would also reccomend doing the axle seals while you got it apart. sometimes removing the axles will make the seal leak if its old.

Sometimes... you have to tap the end of the axle
at its center to jar it loose, Don't jam a screw
driver between the axle flange & drum as there is
a gasket in there. Trey is right.... definitely
replace the axle seals. Also, if the multi-tab
lock washer that fits between the 2 3/8" axle
tube nuts has missing lock tabs or if the key tabs
are real worn.... you should replace them. This is
the ideal time to replace the gear lube and, as
Trey pointed out.... re-pack the bearings
