68 D200 wonders when loaded

Post by dan560 »

I have a 1968 d200 camper special. It is a workhorse dumptruck, we are having a problem with it wondering when loaded. We have taken it to a reputable dealer in the area. They cant fimd any thing wrong, so I have come here we want to keep it running. I need some suggestions about what I can do to fix the problem. Any suggestions would help. Let me know if you want to see any pictures or areas you need to see ho help with the problem.

We are willing to get a 68 wrecker to take the front end if we cant fix the current issue.

I wonder What is it "wondering" about, where it's next load will go? Is it a problem, because, due to this wondering, the truck takes it's mind off the trip in progress! sounds like the truck has a mind of it's own since it has the ability to "wonder".

I'm sure he meant 'wander' [spelling cop on here would be a full time job for ya].

To the question:
MIGHT be overloading and putting too much weight on the FAR back.
Might try tightening up the steering box ( it IS adjustable)

I thought a little humor would be good for us this evening.
I would suggest you check the tires. If they are fairly old, you could have had a radial belt slip in one, or both front tires. This can show up as a wander, usually when loaded.

Any wear in the king pins, steering linkage, would be made worse by a heavy load in the rear.

I think that most any truck will wander with a big enough load in the back. But I suggest that you spend a few bucks and replace the rag joint at the base of the steering column. They often get overlooked, and when you pull it off you may be surprised to see how rotten the rubber is. Cheap place to start anyway.

I have fixed wander problems with spring bushings...

so, if the kingpins and tie rod ends are good, and the truck aligns OK (caster, camber, toe-in), I would look at spring bushings
