new master cylinder but iffy brakes

Post by 63d100sixer »

to start, i have a 63 d100 with a 225 slant 6 and non power brakes. when i got the truck it had a master cylinder off of a 73 d100, which was leaking like a sonofa..... well, after being unsuccessful at finding a 63 master cylinder....i resorted to buying another 73 :banghead ...well, i bench bled it, installed it, and used the rear reservoir, plugging the front. well...a week later no brakes...no leaks....hmmm. so, i adjusted the pedal and viola, i had brakes. well...saturday, i was heading to the local watering hole, when i realized i had no brakes again... :banghead

what the heck...no leaks..inspected all of the wheels. great meat..no leaks. :censored

so here i am, debating a couple of things...either go back to original if i can find it.... or

i have a spare power booster that will bolt right up to the firewall, and bolt up to the 73 master cylinder....just one problem....the CLUTCH master cylinder is in the way by about 2mm. arrrrggg

i guess my questions are:

is there a place i can buy a new 63 master cylinder?
is there a way to move my clutch master cylinder?
why dont i have brakes???????

In order to use a power booster, you need a stand off bracket.
Your truck was originally equipped with a single bowl master.
You should find one of these or convert the system to a dual
bowl.... in which case, you'd need the proper line junction
block.

Thanks JimE for that direction to NAPA- they literally DO have everything, and if they say they dont... ask to see their catalogs... hell you can even buy trash bags and light bulbs there...

sounds like the master is bypassing internally. I've had bad luck with masters from auto zone, and best luck with ones from NAPA and car quest.
if yours had a single bowl make sure that the front and rear lines are separated at master outlets.. i made that mistake once and had a strange pull and low pedal.
you may also need a proportioning valve for dual reservoir that give more braking to the front.

just my :2cents
