Here's what I did on my Deora project. Of course, the front spring support was modified to keep the caster angle correct.

At the start of this post you mentioned "bump steer".
I've heard of the term but don't know what it means.
Would you be willing to enlighten me please? I own my
Grandfathers 66 Sweptline and I would like to lower it and
keep the straight axle also. Thanks,
Rob

if you keep the straight axle in the current configuration (sittin below the leafs) you can lower the front by 2 methods
1. have the spring shop take out all positive arch
2. go to http://www.eatonsprings.com and order a factory style setup that will keep your good ride and drop the front 3"
some have put the straight axle on top of the leafs only to find out that the geometry is changed and you have your draglink hitting on the axle or it no longer can be turned fully in one direction, thus creating bumpsteer :Thumbsup

Definition: The tendency of a vehicle to suddenly veer or swerve to one side when hitting a bump or dip in the road. The condition is caused by uneven toe changes that occur as a result of the steering linkage or rack not being parallel with the road surface. This causes the wheels to change toe unevenly as the suspension undergoes jounce and rebound.
