Need some info from front disc brake swap people

Post by steven »

Do I need to run a proportioning valve? It was always my plan to buy one, but the cheapest 4 outlet (good one, with brake light switch and everything) is like $100+, which isnt in my budget. Thanks...

I didn't, and things worked just fine. I did buy the (I think '72) disc/drum master cylinder, though.

i bought an adjustable proportioning valve, but didn't use it. i used a 72 disc/drum master cyl., it is just a hint rear brake biased, but not bad enuff to need to HAVE to cure the prob. the biggest issue is you can't power brake it.

Thanks guys. Matt, do you still have the one you bought? Is it the singe line one or the multiple line one? I might find a used one on the bay or something, too. I know that there are a bunch of buy-it-now chevy ones on there, that may be the way I need to go. :Thumbsup

Yeah, what they said. A '72 MC from a Dodge truck with disc front brakes. No problems here. Of course, my rear brakes are just about totally shot ...

i should clarify - i used a proportioning valve off a 85 Dodge - the master cylinder i used is a rebuild unit from NAPA for a 72 Dodge pickup - it bolted right up.

i bent my own lines to the valve and then new lines to the corners. it took almost all of two rolls of 25' tubing. i probably have 10 feet left.

A proportioning valve really should be used. I am not saying those not using one are wrong,
but there could be hidden problems. Braking might be fine on solid pavement, but there
could be unexpected results on loose or slippery surfaces.

If you use an adjustable valve, put a brass tee in the front lines and install the valve
in the rear only. An adjustable valve really is superior to anything from the factory.
Proper braking bias will change with different tires, weight distribution, and towing.
The factory picks a happy medium and accepts it for all scenarios. Ideally big blocks and
small blocks would have different valves, but they don't.

I have drums and can't power brake it, the cure is that the rear brakes need to be backed off, I have never power braked, until carb tuning, but found that my rear brakes will not allow, and I still haven't backed them off, I can spin tires without doing that :Thumbsup

if your trying to save money but yet "Get Er Done" you can as already posted, get a proportiion valve from the 80's D150 trucks that all have front disc and rear drum, from PullnSave :salut

Thanks again guys, all good info. I'll have to see if I can find one of those 80's valves online, I know where there are a few 80's dodges in a yard, but its too dang cold. :Thumbsup
