Sheer pins in rear drums that don't move? HELP!!

Post by army64100 »

2 weeks ago I bought a complete, sweet orig. 64 100 sweep short bed 6 cyl. 3 speed on column. This truck sat for about five years. The rear drums have a large nut, flat washer, and sheer pins in the drums? The front adj. were stuck, I assume the back are they will not move. I have tried tapping on the drum like normal, hammering (as not to cause damage) and all of auto zones rent-a-tool pullers (pullers either don't line up with the studs or hit the axel between the studs)and pried with lug wrenches, large screw drivers. They don't move at all! I Know it needs a total brake job, but I can't move them. ANY HELP IS GREATLY WANTED! THANKS!!!! The Sheer pin(steel? alum?) are a approx.1/4 in. rectangle drove in a grove in the drum and in the axel

Depends on what part of the country your from but, here in California we have Harbour Freight Stores, and I bought this Made in China el cheapo hub puller, that I used on my sisters rambler a few years back, had the same problem, had to go through the slot on the back and adjust shoes in to loosen the hub, then used this hub puller, which mounted to the lug bolts and had a center bolt which landed on the center point of axle shaft, I had to apply a lot of pressure, and then whack the hell out of the outside of the drum with a big hammer and block of wood to get it to pop loose from the pressure. Might work for you, might not. good luck.

When you say sheer pins, do you mean a Large Key in a key way or woodruf Key?

What you have is the stock rear 8.75 axle with
splines that the drums fit on, key (square) and keyway
(grove in drum and axle). 64 is the last year for
this type of axle .
Sometime folks get lucky getting drums off, but most
of the time you MUST use a puller, and just not any
puller will do, has to be one that attaches to the
lugs (wheel studs), standard 'jaw' pullers will
not do the job and you risk damage to the drums
if you use one. Even so leave the nut on but loose
on the axle so that the end does not get mussed up
when the puller is turned down, after the
drum is loose then remove the nut....

Jeff
I don't have to pull drums right now but, that site for the hobbyist is GREAT. I looked at the NOS COLLECTION photos and it is awesome. One photo has a complete Swept gauge cluster with tach.....the tach only goes to 3500 rpm tho so I guess it is from a diesel equipped truck.
I'd heard about some of these parts caches but I'd never seen the photos before. DROOL........... :banghead :banghead

Stuck Drums

If Ida seen this sooner, Ida replied sooner: you need a good puller, but you also need some heat on the hub where it fits over the axle. I've actually used a propane torch; it just takes a little longer than an ox/acetylene setup. Snug your puller down tight, then apply some heat to the hub, evenly around its circumference. Make sure you leave the nut on the axle, but not tight! As soon as the heat does its magic, the hub/drum will pop right off.
