Brakes Locking Up

Post by johnny »

Guys, on my '67 W500 with vacuum over hydraulic brakes, the brakes lock up when the brake pedal is pushed. On the first push of the brake pedal, it gets real stiff, the brakes lock, and the truck won't move. After truck sits for a few days, the pressure drops and the brakes release. Is this indicative of a problem with the master cylinder? Thanks!

Yes, it sounds like the master is not opening up the pressure return port. Sometimes you can diassemble and clean master, but usually needs a rebuild and new fluid.

If the master cylinder pushrod cannot return all the way out, to the non-braking position, then that port will not be opened, so you might double check your pedal and master cylinder pushrod adjustment. It needs to have a little play at the pedal.

Sounds like the master cyl is leaking past the first piston seal. If you remove the master cyl from the fire wall you may find that it is leaking from the rubber boot to the push rod.
