Mopar Power Steering on a straight axle Sweptline
For those of you that have been coming here for more than 2 yrs, you'll remember I always preached their has got to be power steering that can be done using Mopar parts, well as wideblock will remeber I had the idea a few years ago of putting a power steering rack on the trucks, well its rewarding to see someone take this idea and make it work, this is a 2002 Dodge Ram truck power rack, using newer 2001 and up Dakota tie rod ends, power steering. later I will be getting a parts list for this swap looks pretty damn easy, and it didn't take countless hours to figure out how to make ford or chitty parts fit.

Wow, talk about simple and easy...good find Robin.
That's probably stout enough to use on my D300 too
That means that old New Yorker tilt and telescope column that I've been tripping over for 20 yrs also might get a home

Mounting the rack and connecting to the knuckles should be pretty straight forward.
What about the column? That would be the trickier piece I would think. It would
need lengthened considerably and might require a couple U-joints?? Any pics there?

Borgesson would have all the little hunks needed to connect the column to the rack. It would be nice, of course, if it was a straight run just needing two joints and a shaft.nfury8 wrote:Mounting the rack and connecting to the knuckles should be pretty straight forward.

it appears to be mounted to the axle - how does the connection to the column work with the axle moving up and down?

Re: Mopar Power Steering on a straight axle Sweptline
There are slip splines available, like the 4x4 drive shafts use.
The thing I was concerned about is while the Borgeson joints and slip splines
can easily conquer any crazy routing needed, they add up in cost FAST!
2 Borgeson joints were going to cost almost as much as my entire power steering swap.

Re: Mopar Power Steering on a straight axle Sweptline
the column is the Sweptline colum, as mentione by PatS, you get the exstension they have the slip joint ones just like on all 2000 plus Mustangs. this is very simple and easy, however how far does your axle move, their is some movement but even the factory only allowed for 3-5 inches. Good eyes digdoug, yes D's are behind the axle, this was another one of the things I had said could be done, and it was put down, you swap the drivers side to the passenger and passenger to driver, he took the curve out of the driver side by cutting and welded it straight. As I had said previously this is not my truck this is Old_Blue the one with the EFI 360 and disc brakes, he drives it daily

I would also like a parts list when you get it together. Its good to see some one sticking with all mopar parts.

Re: Mopar Power Steering on a straight axle Sweptline
Old_Blue has that, doesn't take much, Dakota tie rod ends, and a swap of a couple existing parts, the Dodge Dakota rack mounts to the back of the axle it can be used also. I believe he may be workin on adding the upper and lower control arms to the frame, he mentioned last year at the Cruise he was leaning to IFS add on.oldtiredrebel wrote:Parts List?

Robin above you say Old_Blue has the parts list, in another post you said:MountainMoparRobin wrote:Old_Blue has that, doesn't take much, Dakota tie rod ends, and a swap of a couple existing parts, the Dodge Dakota rack mounts to the back of the axle it can be used also. If he doesn't post, how about helping out with that parts list! -BDMountainMoparRobin wrote: "...their is so much information passed between people along with things that people don't remember to talk about here on the forums and alot of them don't post, like Old_Blue he is a technician by trade and he has a EFI 360, power steering by a 2002 Dodge Ram rack, disc brakes, he gets it done at work and it record breaking time...

i agree with BigDad - this post is useless without an accurate parts list.
