W-200, 4 Speed To 727 Conversion?

Post by dashshifter »

I have leads on W-200's with 4 speeds but I want an auto. Is this do-able? The bolting it to the block seems pretty straight forward. The shifter and kickdown linkage I can handle. Am I missing something? What problems will show themselves? Steve

For '68 and earlier W's, you'll have to remove the
bellhousing crossmember and locate the proper auto
tranny crossmember, the correct short tailshaft 727,
corresponding driveshafts, yokes, etc.. You'll need
to cool the tranny with the proper radiator and
external cooler also. There are bolt-in spanners that
run between the cut bellhousing crossmember. If you
can't locate originals, you can fabricate them
pretty easily. For '69-'71 trucks, you'd have to
locate the proper short tailshaft tranny, radiator
and external cooler. I'm sure someone will chime in
here with regards to the tranny crossmember and any
differences you'll encounter with it for manual vs.
auto tranny trucks.

Why not look for a 70-71 truck with a 727 already in it?

John is dead on with what is needed.
Autos make for less fatigue and maintainance, but the trade offs are heat and 10-20% worse gas milage.

the cobbler has it down........That is what I had to do my w200 to make it a 383/727. I had a 68 d200 camper special to steal parts off of to make it easier.
