1965 Poly Carb ID please

Post by DarrellG »

Hello - I've got some carb issues, mainly the Accelerator pump is seized/stuck and I'd like to go back to the proper choke (it's got a manual pull rigged up now...)

But - I don't know what I'm doing, and I don't know what I've got

The only number I can find on the carb is on top, 3-243A, it's on the cleaned off spot in the pics. The little tag is MIA. I want it back to original, is this the carb it left the factory with?

Dad's a mechanic, says he'll rebuild for me but I need to know what I've got and what parts I can get first.

Here's a link to pics -

I need a choke cup, spring and rod and it should have the vacuum pulloff thingy too, correct? There's a vacuum line on the back that's plugged, I assume that's what it's for? Is this stuff available? Anybody got stuff I need? I'd buy parts or the whole thing just to have a spare if it's the same as what I've got.

Thanks in advance!

Darrell

That is a Stromberg (Bendex)WW3 2v carb, depending on year it is most likely stock to your truck.
A large tube at the base of the carb will be for
the PCV valve hose, small tube should be for the vacumm advance.

May or may not be worth a rebuild. They often do
not work right after a rebuild.

Standard makes kits for them no problem.

If it were me I would be thinking about a good
Carter BBD as a replacement.

Thanks Jeff, appreciate it! My truck's a late '65 D200, 200hp 318 poly with an automatic.

Is there a specific model Carter, or part # I should be looking for? (I know I need one for an auto for the linkage) Will my stock air cleaner still fit if I swap over?

Thanks again,
Darrell

You can try part #ECO-1582 for the Stromberg. I had
it scratched down a scrap of paper. Like Jeff said,
Strombergs can be finnicky carbs.... if yours was
leaking a lot at the butterfly shaft, I don't know
if I'd re-build it or not. If you could find a parts
house that had a '69-'71 vintage Carter BBD to fit
an auto tranny Sweptline LA318, you could compare
your linkage next to it. Your stock air cleaner will
fit either the Stromberg or Carter BBD. There's a
guy over at Norm's site that had a re-built Stromberg
for sale a little while ago.... he goes by the name
MarkD. You might check with him too if need be.

i have to argue a bit here guys. i did the swap from a strom to a carter. the air cleaners dont swap. at least they didnt on my 66. the strom used the air cleaner with the thumb screw to clamp it to the neck. the carter used the typical stud thru the middle to hold it down. now if by some reason yours already uses the center stud thru the whole assebly, then they will interchange, but the clamp on wont work cause the carter has a bigger neck on it. when i did my swap, i went to napa and asked for a 66 d100 carb, they gave me the option of a strom or carter as both were used that year. i just choose the carter and they did the rest. the book lists both carbs, at least it did for my 66, so it should save you a ton of time trying to look up the right part numbers. :Thumbsup

BTW, the carter ran smoother, and more reliable then the strom did. it was also easier to fine tune. :salut

Good point Trey :Thumbsup The Stromberg I have is
off a '68 D200 and uses the wing nut. I can't recall
as to whether you can transfer the wire & stud from
an older Stromberg to a Carter :thinking . I also
have a Stromberg from a '66 Coronet and it has the
wire & stud set up too. Later air cleaners work on
that one as well.

Hmmm, I really want to keep my air cleaner. Mine's the thumbscrew type, no bolt. Maybe I'll have Dad do a rebuild and see how it goes. The truck actually runs pretty well right now, pre-tuneup and with a stuck pump  If I can't dial in the rebuilt Stromberg then I'll consider the swap.

Baby steps, I wanna get this darn thing daily driving!

Thanks for the ID guys!

My sons 66 D318 had an aftermarket Holley 2 barrel adapted on it. While looking for a replacement carb for it I found out that a Stromberg or a Carter was used. I decided to go with the Carter, I got one of an 80's LA318, it bolted right on and everything hooked up, his is a 4 speed though so I didn't have to mess with the auto linkage.
