Post by coffincustoms »

Hey guys how do you time this doggone thing?! The manual says that I need to used a test light and watch my #6 exhaust valve. Can I just use a timing light? Thanks for all your help!

Timing light is the preferred way, disconnect the vacuam advance, and put the timing light on #1 spark plug wire and then start the engine (also hook the timing light red to positive on the battery) automatics are 10-14 BTDC manuals are TDC :Thumbsup

Timing spec's will very depending on year and model
of engine, and even then you may find that it runs
better off standard spec's.

my original owners manual says 2.5 degrees BTDC for 6 cyl, 5 BTDC for 273, 10 BTDC for 318-1, and 12.5 BTDC for 318-3. mine is a 318-1 and i have it set at 12 degrees BTDC and it runs great with no spark knock. the "b" means before. before top dead center.

yes there should be a mark on the balancer, you may have
to look for it by turning the engine over by hand (using the fan if the belts are tight).
Note: some engines do not have a balacer (most do)
and the mark will be on a pully then.
I like to hit it with a little white/yellow paint to make it
easy to see.

Sometimes the ring on the outside of the balancer will
slip and the mark will be off. To check to see
if it has slipped, pull #1 plug and put the
balancer mark to mark on engine, see if you can
feal the top of the piston in the plug hole (some
engines you will need to use a screw driver to reach
far enough).

So the degrees would be shown on the metal tab that I allign the marks to?
