318 Oil Pan Torq specs

Post by coffincustoms »

Hey guys, I just got done pulling, cleaning, and painting my oil pan before placing it back in with a new seal. I have the shop manual but it seems to be no help. What should I torq the bolts to and in what order? Thanks!

Start in the middle on the sides, work forward and backward evenly, put them in by hand until snug. Then come back in the same pattern with a wrench or socket until snug(do not over tighten, you will split a cork gasket), we are talking 18-22 ft lbs max. Drive the truck for week, then come back and give them another 1/4-1/2 turn. Jim

spray both sides of the gasket with copper coat. then use a nut driver to install the bolts, just a hair past snug and you wont have any leaks. on a lot of my race motors, we used split ring lock washers under the pan bolts and the valve covers. tighten untill the lock washer collapses fully and your good if you have used a nice gasket sealer like coper coat and a dab of rtv in the corners.
