Pulling the 318

Post by slick »

I'm getting ready to pull the 318 out of my truck....Dumb question, but is it easier to pull it with the bell housing still attached or unbolt it at the bellhousing...it's a hydraulic clutch 4-speed...

support the rear if the tranny with a 2x4, and pull just the engine. that damn 4 speed is a heavy SOB. id leave it in if you can. just disconnect the bell from the motor and pull it that way. leaving the bell and the tranny in place. thats the way i would do it. or yank engine and tranny togather. much easier to assemble in the driveway then under the truck. but like i said, the 4spd is a heavy mother. they are a pain to deal with, and i wouldnt if you dont have to.

with a hyd clutch ,you HAVE to pull the bell with the engine, there are bolts inside the bell that attach it to the engine, leave the trans in the truck

Exactly :Thumbsup .....
Also, unbolt at least one of the crossmember
insulators from the frame. You can't just remove
the 2 large stud nuts and get that crossmember
off.... not without a lot of dicking around and
the likelihood of damaging the threads on the studs.
