Overdrive for D200/D300

Post by Bill55AZ »

Got a friend in Idaho did a conversion to his truck, but it required an adapter plate between his bellhousing and tranny.
He started with a new process
540 5 speed transmission and had to purchase the six gears he needed from a transmission warehouse. New Process built 5 speed overdrive transmissions for use in trucks that were driven in flat country so all he did was buy the gears and install them in a non-OD transmission he had on hand.
That means that the 540 was available already in OD configuration, so that is an option for you guys wanting better MPG.
He got 17MPG in his 2wd D200 with 440 engine taken from a 67 RT, bored out a bit, lowered the CR a bit to use lower octane gas, and used the factory performance exhaust manifolds that came with the engine. He experimented with different intakes and carbs until he got it where he wanted.
