New Engine!

Post by clean_rx8 »

I hope you guys can help me out. I am buying an engine from my boss at my old job. I trust him and believe that these parts are in the 340. Here is what he says it has: 10.5:1 compression pistons, Rebuilt J series heads, Edelbrock intake, double roller timing chain, a heavy duty crank, an 850 cfm carb, punched .010 or .030 over, and a 727 tranny. This sounds like a good street motor to me. It sounds like too much carb but that can be changed. It only has about 350 miles on it. He is going through a divorce and is selling his 68 barracuda and the motor/tranny for $1500. I am going to buy it and take the motor/tranny and put it in my truck and sell the cuda body. Does anyone have a similar setup on their 340? What kind of power should i expect?

#1, loose the 850 in favor of a 650. #2, do you know what kind of cam is in it?? and #3, that compression is going to force you into some real small numbers on timing advance, or running premium gas. but it does sound like a good motor. 340's kick @#% if your looking for a drag motor and not a work horse.

I forgot the cam, it has a 512 Lunati Cam. I wont be doing much work in this truck. It is going to be a street rod. I'd be happy in the 14 sec 1/4 mile range

engine

That is a high lift, and will have a defenite lope, are the lifters regular tappet or rollers 1:6:1? the 340 in the 69 version is 10:1 so could be stock, the big 850 is because of the 512 lift, but smaller will do, are they stock cast pistons? or hypernuematic? if the internals are cast with what you have you are looking at no worse than the 14's, possibly faster, very possible :Thumbsup What year barracuda??? what body??? A or E coupe, fastback????

i might even downsize the cam and carb. I will be driving this every day. I am not sure on the engine internals. The donor car is a 1968 Barracuda Formula S fast back. I will be selling the body after i pull the motor, transmission, and may be a couple other things.

Ya know... I love these old trucks but a 340 formula S fastback is a s.w.e.e.t machine.
Is the fish a basket case?

I couldn't agree more. Really would be a shame to tear it apart if it was #'s match. Even if it was not #'s match and the body was good it is worth at least that much, IMHO.
