Poly Rebuild

Post by TimLG »

I finished getting my engine back in this weekend :clap . I had been waiting for the transmission shop, took a month for him to find a couple parts for the A745. I got timing lined up, cranked the engine til I got oil pressure, put the plugs in, hooked up fuel line, and it fired right up. Runs really smooth, put 15 miles on it today with only one problem: when pushing in the clutch, something is rubbing the pressure plate at the end of the stroke. I adjusted the slave cyl pushrod so it won't go far enough to grind off any more of what's rubbing. I put a rebuilt disc, pressure plate and new release bearing, flywheel was resurfaced. Any suggestions?

Make sure that your slave is blead right.
You may wish to blead the master to the slave also
to make sure that the line is clear; if you do both
then you still need to do the following after.
To blead just the slave:
To do this open the bleader on the slave, push
the rod all the way back into the slave (with it unhooked from clutch fork), close bleader, adjust the rod lenght
to fit arm so there is play in the arm on the rod (not a lot of play but a little), put return spring on. That should set it up right.
Nothing but smooth opreation should happen, no rubbing, sticking or grinding noises.

If the slave is leaking you need to replace or rebuild it.

Thanks again Jeff. I don't think I explained the noise very well. With the engine running, I push the clutch pedal down and it sounds like metal on metal, hitting someting like the pressure plate, like a stick hitting bicycle spokes at speed. I backed off the pushrod to limit the stroke of the release bearing. Please tell me more about the spring, I dont have one, any pics? I'm having a hard time making myself work on it, it runs so well, I've been trying to get a few miles on it.

You did get the right pressure plate, with 3 arms, not the diaframe one???????
If the pressure plate does not have 3 arms for the throw out bearing to ride against it is the wrong pressure plate and will only get worse with time if it does not lock up altogether.
Light return spring on the slave to clutch arm. Should
be a hanger on the slave (stamped sheet metal held
to slave with slave bolts to bell). Not always needed
to get the slave to return all the way, but helps. I will post a photo in the my tech stuff section (photo 50).

The pic helps alot, I'll make up something. The pressure plate has 3 fingers, I watched it while my wife pushed in the clutch pedal, engine off, and it looks to me like the realease bearing is travelling too far, pushing the fingers until they rub on the center section of the clutch disc, the area where the anti-chater springs are captured. I adjusted the slave cyl push rod so it cant push it too far and works fine. Seems like there ought to be a positive stop to limit the stroke of the release lever, guess as the clutch disc wears, the fingers want to come out farther. Thanks again Tim G

Should not over extend if you follow what I said above
about bleading the slave and then setting the arm
to the slave rod. Just as long as your not getting slippage or grinding noise :dance
