Tranny warm up?

Post by Veriwide »

I fiannaly have a handle on my truck's electrical, so here's whats next.

I have to let my truck warm up for about 15 minutes befor I can get the tranny to go into gear.

I have a unique set up. I am running a 440 magnum out of a 69 Charger R/T, and the 4 speed manual tranny, transfer case, and axels from a 68 Power Wagon 200. It has a hydrolic clutch linkage.

What is needing to warm up?

It drives and shifts fine after the initial warm up period, but I hate idling away 15 minutes of $3/gal gas.

Thanks,

Patrick

clutch in? or clutch engaged and trans in neutral?
I will assume it is the 2nd,
this will get the fluid (gear oil) moving and warm it
up.
Have you drained the oil and replaced it since you
have had the truck? this might be the fix, old oil
can do that because it becomes to thick with time.
It can be other things too, but try that frist..... :2cents

It's a beutiful day here in the mountains.

I got out and changed the geart oil in both the 435 tranny and 205 transfer case. I don't know when it was changed last, but it was black, and I'm glad to know the job is done. I can now keep on a good schedule for changing it again.

Unfotunately my problem still exists. When the struck is started cold, I have to wait around 15 minutes before the truck wants to go into gear. Any earlier than that when I push in the clutch pedal, it just won't go into gear. I can force it into reverse a few minutes before it will accept the other gears.

What else could need a warm up? Hydralic fluid? Master/slave cylinder?

It runs and pulls strong when it's warm. :thinking

Any ideas? :banghead

I'm suspicious of the slave cylinder. See if it travels the same distance warm or cold with someone pushing in the clutch. Can you shift the transmission between gears with the cold engine off?

The slave cylinder seems to travel the same, engine on or off.

With clutch engauged>
Is there slack in the clutch arm on the slave rod when cold? clutch arm from the bell should be able to
wiggle on the slave rod. If not adjust it so you can.
This should not cause any problems when hot.

Patrick, What does it do if you start the truck up cold, in gear, with the clutch disengaged? This will stop/hold all of the gears in the trans from turning. Can you hear the pilot bushing making noise? or does it try and roll the truck? How long has the engine/trans been in the truck? When it was installed did you replace the pilot bushing, and lube the splines where the clutch disc rides on the trans? I suspect a dragging clutch or pilot bushing problem. my :2cents
