'76 400 auto into '65 w200 crewcab standard

Post by alaskaw200 »

What needs to happen to make this work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Would this be a better swap than a '70 318 that is also a standard?
Thanks

:welcome I take it by your name your in Alaska?? I was at Delta Junction for a little over a year.
YOu would definetly need the later 69-71 transmission mount and then the drive shaft would need some work to shorten, also depending on what is in there now, possibly radiator :Thumbsup

You'd need the correct radiator, correct short tail
shaft BB tranny, conversion to floor [aftermarket]
shift.... dash [correct for'65] shift OR column ['69
through '71] shift, removal of the bellhousing cross
member/installation of tailshaft crossmember for your
auto tranny, correct tranny kick-down linkages, mods
to neutral safety switch, correct BB engine mount
brackets/insulators, proper exhaust [center dump]
manifolds.... Hmmm.... :thinking :thinking ......
this is all I can think of at the moment.

[Oh, one more possibility: Yoke & shaft length mods
to your tranny to t-case short shaft :Thumbsup ]

I'm sure others can fill in what I've missed :usa

John covered most of it, some will depend on what is in the truck now..?
If it is already got the 65 auto shifter you will need
to change to the 66 to 68 shifter (the 65 shifter has 2 cables and will not work with the later trans, one year only shifter made to work with the last year cable shifted 727 in 65).
66 to 68 shifter is a one cable shifter and will work with the 66 and up 727 trans (be sure to grab all the needed parts, dogleg trans shifter arm, cable, shifter, support for the cable that mounts to bell, will mount to same hole in dash).
And do not forget the kickdown arm, you will need it.....

Thanks for all the information. I live in Fort Yukon AK which is north of Fairbanks 140 air miles. Air miles because its the only way to get up here. I've been to Delta, nice place. I have a complete 1976 w30 that has the engine and tranny that I will be putting into the 1965 w200. Does the w30 have the "correct short tail shaft BB tranny"? Will the tranny cross member and engine mounts switch over?

JeffC may have pictures of the correct big block
engine mount bracket in his files for you to look
at. If not, I can e-mail pics of mine. The tranny
in your W300 can most likely be used, but the cross
member, if not originally out of a Sweptline, may
have to be modified to ensure the correct orientation
of your drive line. As the '65 W200 has the divorced
NP201, I would think that you'd be able to fabricate
the short shaft from the tranny to the t-case, if
need be. Click on JeffC's home page and look for
the BB engine mount pics.... it you don't see them,
let me know and I'll take pics of mine. :Thumbsup
