Jeff C,
I'm between a rock and a hard place. I don't have a dipstick assembly so I'm fabricating one from a F__d Windsor small block. I'm trying to determine the length of the tube by filling the engine with oil and trimming the tube until the oil on the dipstick is at the full mark. I thought it would be easy, thinking all old v-8s held 5 qts until I read the shop manual showing 5 qts for the oil pan plus 1 qt for the filter = 6 qts. With your latest post on oil pan sizes, I'm really confused. Any suggestions?

Most probably you have the 5 +1 pan, there was a optional 6 +1 pan (called off road but also used
in HD and W (4x4)applications and could be factory ordered).
Above pans are all front sump pans, if by chance your
engine was transplanted at one time from a car (center sump) then it would be a 4 +1 pan.
