318-3 Poly?
318-3 Poly?
Hi folks...found today, what is supposed to be a Poly 318-3. I am told that those engines came with hydraulic lifters. This engine has a sticker on the valve cover which reads "202HP",and the exhaust manifolds are ribbed. I did not have time,or a wrench to pull a valve cover to check. Anyone have any info on these engines? Thanks....

the 202 hp stickers and the ribbed exhaust sounds like a LA block 318, not a poly. does it have the smooth edge on the valve covers or the fluted edges??

Here's a quickie on the "Premium" 318-3 (poly):
................................318-1.................318-3........
Compr. Ratio:.........8.25:1...............7.50:1
Compr. Pressure:....120-160 psi..........90-130 psi
Timing:...................10` BTDC.............12.5`BTDC
Camshaft:.............chain................roller chain
Conn. Rod Journal:..2.124"-2.125"........2.1235"-2.1245"
Bearing clearance:...0.0005-.0015"........0.001-.002"
Bearing Material:.....babbit..............Tri-metal (ex. main brng #5)
Valves:..................solid stem............stellite faced
Valve Lift:..............0.380"................0.381"
Ex. Valve Rotator:..No....................Yes
Tappets (lifters):...Mechanical............Hydraulic
Ex. Vlv Spring:.......137-150 lbs...(open)..178-192 lbs
......Pressure.........49-57 lbs...(closed)..80-90 lbs
Oil Pump pressure:..50-70 psi.............60-80 psi
Oil capacity:...............5 qts..(less filter)..6 qts
Manifold heat:...........Thermostatic..........None
And there you have the differences! (Yes, the 318-3 has hydraulic lifters) Lower Compression, Higher pressure oil pump, exhaust valve rotators, different exhaust valves, more oil capacity, and "premium' bearings!
Hope this helps your quest...

if it has the governor on it, you got a real good chance of it being a 318-3. the smaller trucks didnt have the gov, and the ones that did were all the big trucks that got the 3 series engine. good find. take the gov off and she will run tons better.
