engine swap 6cyl to big block?

Post by dski63 »

Hi to all! I have a 1963 crewcab w200 powerwagon with a slant6 that is tired with a 4spd and 4:10 gears. I have a fresh 413 that came out of a 1964 imperial and I am thinking about using it,do I need a new bellhousing and flywheal? motor mounts? raidiator? can I use a automatic transmission? any information about this swap will be really appreaciated thank's Dave.

Yes on the flywheel, yes on the bellhousing, most
likely on the rad [hose neck orientation and the
need for at least another row of cores], yes on the
engine [mount] brackets and a "probably not" on the
tranny. You'd have to cut the manual tranny bell-
housing crossmember out for beginners. Also, you'd
have to do some driveline mods to get it to hook up
to your present driveline. If the [big block] tranny
isn't set up with the in line e-brake drum [highly
doubtful], you'd have to re-configure your rear
axles to accept e-brake cables [I'm assuming your
state requires that vehicles be equipped with
e-brakes]. This information should at least get you
started. :Thumbsup

Hey dski63:
Correction on my previous post....as you own a '63
W200, your emergency brake assembly is on the transfer
case :banghead . You shouldn't have to modify the
emergency brakes but my other information should
still apply :Thumbsup

Thanks John for the info! I did see that after reading your first reply.I think I will stay with the 4spd, I was told that becaus I am using a 413 car motor the crank shaft will be short and I will need a rare offset flywheel or use a crank from a truck, is this information true? Dave.

You might also need a new K- Memeber in the front end?

Is it a 6 or 8 bolt crank? Also, is it drilled for
a pilot shaft/shaft bushing? Regarding the actual
flywheel you'll need, maybe JeffC or Terry Holcomb
will steer you right.... it must be compatable with
a hydraulic clutch set up.... that I do know.
