Poly 318 valve adjust??

Post by crewcabdon »

Anyone have tips or directions for adjusting valves?? Also curious as to RPm's & hp. I just installed a tach on mine to check rpm's. Mine has 4.88 gears. Looks like @ 3100 rpm's at 60 mph. Also my data tag on truck "164 hp @ 3900 rpm's" I see alot of truck books representing 200 or 202 hp at 4400. What was this engine designed to turn??? I am wanting to go to 3.73 gears and add a 4v carb. Any suggestion??

I don't turn mine over 4000rpm's. I am not sure what is safe.

thanks
Don

I assume you have a poly engine, LA engines mostly do not need adjustment since most are hydro lifters.........

the poly will turn 5200rpm, at least mine has a time or 2. LOL but its a lot of iron to sling that fast. 4000rpm is about the safe limit. runing 3000-3200rpm steady is about as high as you want to push it as well. as far as a 4bbl goes, stay at 500cfm or lower or youll bog the crap out of a stock engine. a 500 eddy jetted down one stage on the front jets works like a dream. :Thumbsup
