What 4speed?

Post by steveinaz »

What 4 speed is in the D400/500? Am I right to assume that it is some version of the Np435 with a larger input? (Any leads on locating one would be greatly appreciated too.) SteveinAZ

I thought I had seen one years ago. I remembered the input shaft being larger than the 1 ton and below trans. Wish I could find one laying around so I could measure it. SteveinAZ

the NP420 is actually STRONGER than the NP435. The difference is that the 420 is a cast iron case, while the 435 is aluminum, and the 420 is only synchro in 3 and 4 while the 435 is fully synchro.

Now the NP540 is the five speed tranny.

I have no opinion or knowledge of whether one is stronger than the other. I do know the 435 is a CAST IRON case not aluminum. The top cover is aluminum. It also is not full synchro as there is no synchro on 1st gear. The 445 close ratio is supposed to be full synchro although I have never seen or driven one so I can't say for certain.
