NEW Silly question....

Post by surfdude »

How necessary is it to have the pilot bushing installed? /6 with a 3spd transmission. I took it out for a drive and had some shuddering at higher speeds above 40mph.... I pulled the tranny, pilot bushing WAS in place, so now what could be the shuddering problem?

the pilot bushing keeps the clutch disc in proper alignment to the pressure plate and flywheel. if it is not properly centered it will throw off the balance of the clutch setup and give you a NASTY vibration...

another thing that could happen is eventually the input bearing in the tranny could fail or worse still the mainshaft within the tranny will wear unevenly at the back of the input shaft and then you'll be in some serious do do... if that does not align properly to your cluster gear then the slider gear on the main shaft won't engage the cluster gear and the syncros won't work properly and then it is a short slippery slope to total distruction.

i am sure there's some more serious things that can go really wrong but these are a couple things came to mind.

Silly question....

I pulled the tranny yesterday and looked, and to my surprise, A Pilot Bushing is installed!! SO, now my big question is, What is causing the vibration when I get the truck over 40 mph? I have a new drive shaft. I replaced all wheel bearings and seals. I guess I'll put it up on jacks, run it and see what is wobbling.

Dude have your new drive shaft double check for balence, It sounds like the weight is out of place , & also double check all engine & trans mounts , to make suer there tight as this will cause a vibration
