Post by mopartruck63 »

i have 360 and 727 for my 318,granny 4 speed 63 swept, where should i look for a drive shaft someone told me a 4 wheel drive because it has a slip yoke, also what mounts should i use for engine, and what crossmember should i use for the tranny ?,also shouldnt the headers for a 67 to 72 fit my truck, the only reason i can think of is that they say from 67 to 72 , is because 67 was to first year of the la 318,and poly 318 has differant exaust ports, the trucks look the same under the hood, thanks will :dance

Your right about the headers, should work since you have a LA engine.
What type drive line do you have now?
If it is a one piece with slip built in that is what you need to stay with.....
If it has a flange with ball a trunion, it can be converted to above type....
If you have the 2 piece with a center bearing
you can use a one piece, but will have to remove the
frame hanger and get a longer drive shaft made. I will make a very long drive shaft but they also used one with the 3 speed trans....

If you're replacing that 4spd [NP420?] with an auto-
matic, you'll have to torch that cross-member that
the manual tranny bellhousing bolts to. You'll have
to locate a cross-member from an automatic tranny
Sweptline for the easiest installation.... a '68 or
earlier should be a bolt in. The right engine mount
bracket that is bolted to your A318 is different from
an LA360 bracket. Do you have the big square rubber
insulators?.... if so.... hopefully they are reusable
because they're tough to come by. I'm assuming that
your NP420 has the emergency brake drum??.... if the
automatic tranny isn't equipped with the same set up,
you'll have to address this at your axle. Look for a
drive shaft from a donor truck of the same wheelbase
with an automatic or A745 3spd.... even if your truck
is a 122" [long bed] wheelbase, it probably doesn't
have a 2 piece drive line and carrier. You'll have
to scrounge up a rad to accomodate the auto tranny.
Regarding headers..... hmmm :thinking ..... you'll
have to proceed cautiously here, as the remaining
"ears" of the cut bellhousing crossmember might give
you some fit issues. ONE MORE THING on that cross-
member you have to remove: You should find or
fabricate a pair of spanners that bolt to each side
of the remaining crossmember "ears".... you'll see
bolt holes on this crossmember.... cut it and LEAVE
these bolt holes on the remaining frame "ears"....
these are the holes for the spanners. I think that
JeffC has some pics on his home page that illustrate
some of what I'm talking about.

John picked up on a few things I missed, yes photos on my page below in the tech stuff section....
Yes, the crossmember under the bell will need to be removed.....
727 trans after 66 all have slip yokes built into the rear of the trans, just need to find the right one for your trans, (stay away from the 65 727 since it is a cable shift trans and you will need the right shifter for it, one year only application) car or truck should work fine.
> now the drive line will have to be made new or from a old one since you will not find one off a other application that will just fit right (at least I'm pretty sure about that).
