Fred,
I've been running the ring and pinnion out of a 72 44f in my 68 44hdf for about 17 years.I used the 68 carrier.If I remember right the newer one had smaller spider gears.

Fred;

Assuming that both are Dana 44 axles, they should work. However, there is one area that seemed to change - at least on the Dana 60 axles - that you may wnat to be cautious of, and save yourself a load of headache over:

If you re-use the carrier fom the 1/2 ton, be sure the axle shafts themselves will fit into the carrier properly (same # of splines).

Otherwise, you may have to take the ring off of the 1/2 ton carrier to use on the existing 3/4 ton carrier.

Have fun!
