Ring and Pinion Question

Say I have a 3:23 gear set and I want to change it over to a 3:55 gear set do I just swap out the ring gear or do I need to change the pinion as well.

I am talking about a standard 8.75 rear end here.

Oh, one problem the 3:23 gears are in a 742 case and the 3:55 gears are in a 741 case.

Gears from a 741 won't swap to a 742 and vise versa. If the 3rd members are complete you can swap them.
