3 spd

Post by Toms66D100 »

I now have a 64 318 to place into my swept. The only question I have is I would like to keep the 3-spd from the /6 instead of using the 727 that is with the engine. Is the /6's 3-spd able to bolt to the 318?

Yes, the 3 speed will stay with the bell. Bell will bolt to the 318, even the flywheel will bolt> but one bolt will not line up with the 318 crank. Best to use the right flywheel from a sm block.

Be sure that your 318 has the trany imput hole for
the imput shaft in the crank, otherwise it will not work no mater how hard you try.

When pulling out the slant, drop the trans and pull the bell with the engine. Really the only way to do this right, as you will find if you try to just pull the engine with out the bell (if we were doing a car, fine pull the engine and leave the bell, but this a truck).

Tom,
When you pull the engine/bell out, make sure you
dis-connect at least one of the bellhousing rubber
insulators with the bell... un-do the insulator
FROM the crossmember [2 bolts]. If you try to just
remove the large nuts from the insulator studs, the
bell will most likely bind up on these studs. It'll
save you some cussing :censored :censored

Thanks for the info guys. I first have to rebuild the 318 before I get to switching the engines, so the truck will be on the road this year with the /6, unless I somehow find alot of free time to spend on the engine.
