poly 318 to la 318

Post by mikestroble »

is this an easy swap? I have a 64 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 4spd. I have lots of la engines. Just think it might be cheaper.

it is a very easy swap. The only things you have to change are the flywheel (must be an LA flywheel. I have one for ya $75 plus shipping if you need it) and the water pump from the "A" will have to be moved over to the LA to put the bottom radiator hose on the right side. You will also need to move your exhaust pipes as the outlets are located differently on the "A" than on the "LA".

That Poly flywheel will work on the LA engine. Also,
a '68 or older Swept flywheel will do the trick. I
have a '66 [Poly] flywheel on my '68 W200 with a '71
LA318 in it. You can't use the '69 or later flywheel
on a hydraulic clutch truck though :Thumbsup

PS.... if you re-do the clutch/pressure plate, etc.,
go to hrclutch.com for parts.... they know exactly
what you're after.... NO HASSLES...

John is right, only exception is the 360 LA engine, it needs its own flywheel.
But the poly fly will bolt right up to any LA318

Remember Mike.... you can't use the '70 flywheel with
the hydraulic clutch set up :Thumbsup .... stick with
the one off of your Poly and you'll be fine. You might
want to get it re-surfaced as long as everything is
all apart.

one rumor i heard is that if i use the poly flywheel with an la engine the starter wont engage and are the bolt holes the same on the crank-flywheel? Thank you.

oh yeah, it would be a poly flywheel, going on a 1970 318 if that helps. Thank you.

Mike,
The crank bolts are the same. You'll have to use the
old direct drive [Poly] starter.
