power steering for a 65 stepside

Post by mrsn »

is there an easy way to add power steering to a slant six in a 65 truck?
What about front disc brakes? Switching from manual to auto trans.
Any tips or directions to point to?
Thanks

There are ways to do both, and several options in both categories... it all depends on budget and fabrication skills. You can drop in a corvette front end like Brian Deeds, FatManFab sells an IFS setup for about $2000 that gives you disk brakes and a mustangII front end, you can adapt the disk brake setup from a Dakota, Aspen, or some of the same vintage larger cars to fit, you can fabricate the addition of a late model power steering gearbox to work in place of the manual one (the company that did this is no longer doing it, but there may be a new group coming up). And then if you are real brave, you can put on a factory power assist steering setup. It comes down to the fact that these trucks are so simple engineering wise, that you can do just about anything you want to with them given the tools, talent, time, and funds. Probably didn't answer your question too completely, but food for thought none the less...

BRAKES:

Both these companies have fabricated front disc brake conversion kits for our trucks.

POWER STEERING:

There is guy/company that has made a good power steering kit for out trucks. Pricey but works good from what I read, I know numerous people who have it.. It's referred to as the "Prototech Power steering kit". Trying to find contact info or website for this guys no luck. Anybody have that? I hear he's collecting names to make another production run.

TRANS SWAP:

I'm sure the swap to Auto is not that difficult, just a matter of acquiring the right pieces to do the swap. Bell housing, column, (If you want to look factory) If not cut a hole in the floor and put in an after market shifter.

Hope that helps a little. When I get that contact info on the powers steering I'll post it here.

if I remember correctly, the uglytruckling company was actually Helitool, which was a company of guys who did work on aircraft and decided to use their equipment to make a little money on the side and have some fun with vehicles they liked. Somewhere in all that mess I have heard they are moving and are no longer making the brake conversion kit... not 100% sure, but someone else will be. As far as prototech, the site that used to serve them was something like http://www.prototechservices.ca My actual link is at the house. I thought Norm was picking up a list because he wanted to pick up making the kits, or he was acting as the middle man...again, not completely sure. Been one of those days..
Thanks, Clint

I do recall hearing something about Norm taking over the production of the Potech kits, or at least looking into it.

Didn't hear about Heilcoil , but you could be right, maybe they didn't get enough orders?

Helicoil will not ship the parts to us since he does not have any rotor spacers. i talked to Roger at AAJ brake - great guy and seems to have a good kit for sale - give him a call - see link in earlier post
