11" Clutch Special Borg and Beck Pressure Plate?

Post by 64D100Poly »

Hello, I have a 64 D100 with a a745 3spd mated to a 318 Poly. I had the original clutch on it which is a 11" Borg and Beck, common right? Over the past couple months the clutch has been disengaging unevenly eventually not even fully disengaging. I did research and assumed all Borg and Becks are the same as long as the diameter is the same? I had bought a RAM clutch #404 11", it bolted right up to the flywheel and looks near identical to the original one that I had pulled out. After slipping the transmission in and hooking up the slave cylinder, my pedal depresses maybe a inch then solid binding. After hours of inspecting it seems that with both clutches removed on a bench, the original's fingers sit below the surface of the clutch, while on the RAM clutch, the fingers protrude outwards past the surface. I noticed the actual machined clutch surface was a good bit thicker on the RAM clutch, so when bolted down the clutch was already so close to its maximum disengaging depth it would max out with little pedal movement. I did note that the original clutch did not have holes in the levers like the RAM clutch did.

Does this sound right or are they all the same and I'm just doing something wrong? Do I have to use the original style clutch? I am aware of the forbidden impossible to find 10 spline discs, fortunately I got my hands on a NOS one.

I would contact these people here. They have been referenced on this website & throughout the truck community. I used them for my W600 NP540 clutch. They seem to know these old trucks. Check out their website then give them a call.

I did get in contact with them, haven't received a reply yet. How much did they charge you for yours?

Mine was for a medium duty truck clutch disc which is slightly larger (and rarer) than the one you are seeking.

Seems like it was about $200. I may still have the ticket somewhere.

This was about 2018, before covid goofed up the world's economy.
