Flywheel balance

Post by BigBlockTrucks »

Looking for some advice from the voices of reason.

Has anyone here tried having a 383 flywheel made to work on a cast crank 440.

From my understanding the 383 is internal balance and the 440 is externally balanced using weight on the harmonic balancer and either the torque converter or flywheel depending on application.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Are you talking about the 143 tooth truck flywheel used from 1969-88 with NP435/445 transmissions?

The cast iron crank 440s utilized a different harmonic balancer in conjunction with external balancing of the torque converter or flywheel. If you utilize the flywheel from a 383 you will need to re-balance to the assembly.

To kind of answer your question. I installed a 400 BB Into my 70 D 500 using a hydraulic CLUTCH Pickup BB Bellhousing (67/68) and for the flywheel used the old 318-3 flywheel from seized 70 318 engine. I had the flywheel rebalanced to work with the externally balanced 400 BB.
So you can get your 383 flywheel rebalanced to work. I had a 77 400 BB truck( won't work with 67/68 bell) flywheel to use as the information for the balance points to change the 318-3 flywheel.
My truck is younger than me.
