2 barrel carb replacement

Post by tgall595 »

I want to replace the 2 barrel carburetor in my 69 D200 with 318. I'm having trouble finding a decent replacement. Has anyone found something that works well and is reasonably affordable?

I'm thinking the OEM carb was a Carter Ball & Ball. It is actually a very good carburetor, in my opinion. Like anything, age & wear may have taken its toll on your existing. Somethings, like throttle shaft wear, a repair kit just doesn't address. (The throttle body shaft bores become excessively worn, allowing air to leak past them, especially at idle, resulting in poor/rough idle.)

I have seen rebuilders offering the Carter Ball & Ball. I, typically, shy away from rebuilt anything, as the quality always seems to be lacking. However, sometimes you don't have a choice. I'd probably at least order one in, that is returnable, and give it a close physical inspection. Checking for things like throttle shaft wear.

Moving to a replacement carburetor is never a simple bolt on. Throttle and kickdown linkage almost always requires modification/adaptation as well as the choke. Fuel lines also need to be re-fitted. Then, the jetting will require some tweaking.

@tgall595 I won't try hard to talk you out of replacing your carb, I'm sure you've got your reasons, but maybe you've got 'less invasive' options?

I was looking to replace my stock Stromberg two-barrel because the truck wouldn't run well, even after a couple of carb rebuilds. I wound up sending it to the Old Carb Doctor for an overhaul and rebush. He did an incredible job. And it was simply a remove-and-replace operation ... no need to figure out mounting, cables/linkages, air cleaner, etc. ... all the stuff you might have to deal with if you replace your current setup.

I recently took a chance on a cheap Carter BBD(high top version), new from China, about $90 on ebay. I swapped metering rods when I ran it on a slant six but went back to what came in it when I put it on a 318. The truck runs just as good with it as it did with a nice original. I did take the time to setup the idle mixture but otherwise was pretty much a bolt on and go affair.

One issue is that the choke linkage is not quite the same as what it replaced(electronic Holley on an '85 W150) as it connects but the choke plate is not fully closed when it should be at cold start.

I can't attest to longevity as I've only had it a few months.

I'm thinking the OEM carb was a Carter Ball & Ball.
My '69 W200 came with a Stromberg 2bbl with the additional benefit of an oil bath air cleaner.

I'd really like to find an oil bath that fits the Carter.

I have the oil bath (although modified to use dry filters) on a Carter in my 66 W100 318 A series Poly.

At least that they made one is good news.

Think the oil bath I used came off a 66 w 100 parts truck with the Stromberg. :thinking :thinking

OK, this is getting odd. The oil bath I have was on a Stromberg for my old 318. From memory, I'm guessing the mating flange on the carb was less than 3" OD. The Carter on the 383 had a MUCH bigger flange (again from the top of my head, 4-5" across), probably matching their 4bbl of that time. An oil bath for that is what I'm looking for.
