Filler hole location and gear oil change Dana 60

Post by tgall595 »

Been searching for the filler hole on Dana 60 and for the life of me can't find it, is there some secret I don't know about? Also recommended gear oil? Capacity?

Fill, should be right on the cover. 80/90 is pretty standard for drive axles and 4oz of additive for Sure-Grip.

The source of my confusion is the service manual. I see the plug for inspection, but the manual describes and shows a diagram of a filler hole where old oil is removed with a suction gun, I cannot seem to find this hole.

Are you certain it's a Dana 60?

On my 65 w 200 there is a drain plug on the bottom. But the fill is on the cover as was said. What year is your truck?

It is a 69 d200, I'm pretty sure it's a Dana 60 with sure grip, I know I need an additive for limited slip, the service manual suggests that there is a small "filler hole" on the side of the diff. The manual contains multiple diffs though and only one diagram when discussing lubrication, does a Dana 60 have different hole for fill and drain? Or do you remove the cover? How have those who have this diff done this?

Dana 60 and 70, 1 hole ONLY!
On back cover, used for fill, inspection and drain with a suction gun, or loosen cover and drain out the bottom. NO DRAIN PLUG from factory.

Sounds like your reading info for the RA36 or RF36/8.75 rear, that does have a side filler plug. But all Dana's are on the back cover. Stock/original would be a threaded plug, but possibly a rubber plug if it has an aftermarket cover, there usually pretty obvious to see. The threaded plug has 3/8" drive square hole in the plug, that you can use a 3/8" drive ratchet and extension to loosen it.

I’m not trying to argue but mine definitely has a drain hole on the flat cast in surface on the bottom of the case. Yes it is definitely a Dana 60

After a quick search I found a thread on another forum and they claimed “the plug disappeared in 68”.

The Dana 60 rear I think appeared in late 50's, definitely by 61. Dodge & Ford both used them, possibly other makes too (including the Mopar cars). And they were around until the early 90's.I'm sure certain a few things changed over that time span.
