part number for 61'tapered non flange axle seals

Post by chriscodd01 »

Hello All,
I read through all posts regarding 61' tapered axel seals and could not locate current part numbers for the inner and outer axel seals.Been looking for weeks. I have had a heck of a time trying to find the correct seals and where to purchase them. Could someone out there please assist. Thanks so much!

I’ll look around and post. I may have saved the old seals. Don’t use the A7 sets (65 up 8.75) they’ll leak, larger inner diameter. You do have the special puller tool, AKA dog bone. You’re going to need a slide hammer or chain with a sledgehammer. PM sent. For others reading, try searching for more popular Mopars of that era. Same seals and such. :2cents Craig

Yup. I was just about to edit. Thanks

Look for wheel seal. Napa had them at one time.

Rock auto should have the seals. You will need this style hub puller to make life a bit easier and not destroy the hub/drum. As others stated, best to source a complete 8-3/4 flanged axle differential if possible.Good luck. :Thumbsup

I found the seals but, IDK what they fit. My best guess is a 471862 and 6241S. I don’t think I had an issue with getting them. Just walked in to O’s and asked for them. But, as already stated, replace the diff with something else. :2cents

Hello guys.
I really appreciate all of your timely input. Thanks so much.
The truck is 99% original, so I want to keep the tapered axles even though I know they are a handful.
I already removed the axles and third member.
The axles actually have a wear mark from the old seals, probably 1/8 wide.
Anyone out there have them machined?
I don't know how easy/expensive they are to find, buy and ship.
Also I saw there is a sleeve that can be used to cover the groove.

Its a 60 yr old truck. If you find them from another truck, they're still old as dirt with 60 yrs of wear on them. What's the point???
Find an old school shop familiar with old tech and they can answer the sleeving question.

Post a picture so we can see how bad. Most diff seals are .5 and others .375. Old mechanic trick was to shim or use a wider seal if the grove was too bad. I’ve done both myself without issue. If ya really need it original, you’re going to pay to get it right. Not sure about the speede sleeve for a tapered axle. Craig

Hello guys,

I got my tapered axles back in. No leaks, yet. Turns out the new inner seals are not as wide as the original inner seals, so they sit perfectly between the bearing and groove. Problem solved, no need for Speedi-sleeves. Here are the original and new part numbers. Here is a nice site to look up part numbers for seals https://www.allsealsinc.com/pdfs/Timken ... _Guide.pdf Thanks all

Original inner axle seal---DCPD 1139897. New inner axle seal---National Seal (TIMKEN) 471862 or (SKF) 14423
Original outer axle seal---DCPD 1409902. New outer axle seal---Napa (SKF) 14359

Original axle bearings---TIMKEN 25880. New axle bearings---TIMKEN 25880
Original axle bearing race---BOWER 25821. New axle bearing race ---TIMKEN 25821

Original Pinon seal---1738831. New pinion seal---TIMKEN 5126 or Napa (SKF) 18708

New Pinion Yoke 7260 series from DennysDriveshafts.com
