1967 D100 318 Transmission Crossmember

Post by 67D100Pickup »

My truck hasn't had a transmission crossmember on it since I've owned it. Does anyone have a picture of what it should look like, installed?

My 65 doesn’t either. If the bell housing is mounted to its own cross member there shouldn’t be one under the tail shaft housing. I’m not sure what year dodge stopped doing it this way.

It changed in 1969 on light duty trucks.

Does it make a difference depending on engine?

Interesting. Yes, my bell housing is bolted down but I rebuilt the motor to 280HP and about the same torque so I fabricated a crossmember with the assumption it used to have one, and would need one. Maybe not?

I was fishing to see how others were mounted so I could approximate the rubber dampers.

No truck before 69 had a manual tranny crossmember, whether slant six or 413, only auto tranny trucks.

What are you planning to bolt the mount to? Unless someone put a newer tranny in it there is nothing to bolt to on the tail shaft housing.

How about a big hose clamp with a piece of tire sidewall between?

Essential parts should be held with ratchet straps. Non essential parts are ok with bungee cords or duct tape.😃😃

Maybe somebody switched the tranny. There are two mounting holes near the back.

Doesn't the NV 4500 have a couple of holes on the tail shaft? Maybe you have one of those?

Then it's a late model tranny, only 69-up had a tail shaft mounts. But now that I'm thinking about this.....a late model tranny wont fit a hydraulic bell as the input shafts are different lengths and splines......so, there's a possibility that someone may have changed the tail housing for some weird reason.

That is strange. FYI, I also think the engine was swapped before. Maybe the engine and tranny were swapped as a set from something else?

It wouldn’t have been a set with later model tranny and a hydro bell. Assuming the pilot shaft is actually reaching the pilot bushing you may be better off only because of clutch availability. The old ten spline clutch is almost obsolete.

The 10-spline clutch is still available through a number of places, just not at your local parts stores. There's a couple places on eBay, McLeod has them also.
