Fan belt chirping noise?

Post by jimharold »

Hey Guys,

When I gun the gas pedal a Chirp/squeal comes from the fan belt. I don't want to ruin my alternator by over tightening the belt but could a loose belt cause the noise? It's just a quick chirp when I punch it. Goes away real fast.

Thanks one and all,
Jimharold

Yes it can. Do you have the correct belt, and by that I don't mean just length but width too.

The belt should be tightened so there is approximately 3/8" of belt deflection at the mid-point between pulleys.

Got It. Belt stretch over time. All nice and quiet now. Thanks for the hints they help folks remember some of the basics of owning older vehicles.

Jimharold.
