later big block bell

Post by Jim100 »

I'm sure I have talked about this before. sorry.
Is the 1970 (23 spline NP435) big block bell housing the hard one to find?

They are out there. But none of them are cheap. And then finding the related parts to complete the set up is more money

10 yrs ago the "going rate" was $300 for the early bell and $500 for the later. Probably different now.

Should be the other way around. The early ones are rarer than the late, 2yrs vs 3yrs.
If there getting $500.00 for a late 69-71....might as well just buy a SFI blow shield, would be way ahead of it. Then you can ditch the 143 tooth flywheel too.

Does the 361 industrial bell housing work in pick ups using a standard 318 100/200/300 series flywheel :thinking :thinking

The "late" one essentially was used from 1969 until 1978. Not same part number (68-71 vs 72-78)& the clutch pieces changed but as far as bolting a 435 to the BB I believe they swap out.

I don't think so. I think the 361/413 industrial engines had 8 bolt cranks back then, if that's what you are asking. If you are asking about putting a 361 & its own bell onto a 435 that's in a pickup, keep in mind the input shaft dia is different than what a medium duty truck had, so the disc wouldn't work.

I had (recently sold) a 361 out of a 66 D300 sitting next to a car 413 out of a 63 D200 in my shop, both with the exact same bell, same part number.

Ya, but there are a lot of the bigger ones, that are different. I remember going through that when I bought mine. Maybe the 300's are the same, but I looked a bunch of bell housings from the bigger trucks (medium-duty stuff) and they were totally different. As mentioned 8-bolt cranks, 13" clutches, tranny bolt pattern, etc... so if the flywheels are different....guessing the starters were different too.

Anything out of an industrial motor, I'd double check it before buying it. I looked at a lot of medium-duty or industrial bells when I bought mine and there totally different. Some had different mounts, tranny bolt patterns, bigger clutches/13", 8-bolt flywheels.......

I know they have different clutch assembly and flywheel. Have one I took off a 361 and wanted to know if the bellhousing casting was the same as a pickup (100/200) one :thinking :thinking :thinking
When I put the 400 BB into my 70 D500 a pickup 100/200 series bellhousing was used for conversion.

If the flywheel dia changes, then the bell HAS to change too. Since starters bolt to the bell, and the starter opening in the bell is not adjustable, only ONE size of flywheel will work in a particular bell. Otherwise, the starter will never engage the flywheel. Just basic geometry!

Most blow shields are multi pattern setups. Just double check the front bearing cover hole, to make sure it fits.
All your blow shields are adjustable also to line the pilot shaft and bearing to the crank, with offset dowel pins. Being a 23 spline 435, everything should fit and you will be able to run a 130 tooth flywheel instead of the 143 tooth. My guess would be possibly only modifications that might be needed is to the clutch linkage for the ball mount. I'd call a place like Lakewood and tell them what your doing......I'm sure they will be able to tell you all the spec's on the housing and whether or not it will fit and or any mod's needed.
