1963 318 Poly Valve Seals

Post by TexasJude62 »

Hi fellow Sweptline owners! I’m preparing to replace the valve seals on my 63’ D100 (not pulling the head), and I have a couple of questions:

Are these the correct FelPro part numbers? I confirmed with ABC parts and Summit Racing. Each kit has 8 seals from what I can tell (16 seals total 🤔) of. 4 for intake side and 4 for exhaust.

SS12764 Exhaust side
SS13955 Intake side

Not doing the springs because I’m not sure how to tell if it’s a stock cam, or not. Any advice on determining? Valve covers are off and painted, so I have access to view.

I’m planning on using nylon rope vs. air to hold the valve stems in place. Seems like a personal preference thing. My understanding is that I’ll need to find TDC on each valve, insert a lot of rope, and then back the piston back down onto it? I’ll be using the Lyle 36050 spring compressor to remove the keepers.

Finally, do I need to do anything with the rockers since it’s just valve seal replacement?

Thanks in advance for your help. 😀

I have done valve seal replacements on a number of engines with an air adapter pressurizing cylinder to hold valve in place. Never caused me a problem. :thinking :thinking :thinking :thinking

My compressor discharge air through lines is regulated to 100 psi. You could go 120 if you want.

Pressurizing the cylinder will often push the piston to the bottom of the cylinder if its not exactly at TDC.

If the engine is still in the vehicle & he has a manual transmission couldn't he place it in high gear & chock the wheels?

Sure if you want. But in my mind a waste of time. If cylinder is pressurized to hold valves closed they will hold piston up or down. Just do not stop air from flowing into cylinder.

Yes, that's right. There won't be any rocker arms in it so won't have to be at TDC. OP mentioned TDC and I was fixated on that, not the fact there wouldn't be any rockers.
