1963 Townie with factory 4speed & /6. N.P. 420, Gear Vendors ??'s

Post by Cris »

Is anyone running one of these.? We'd like to do more hi-way driving without killing the engine.
Rear end ration is a 3.91 according to the door tag. I know there's 'potentially' Dodge overdrive trannies
out there but I'm unsure about spline counts and all the other stuff. I've searched over the last few months
every now & then trying to find alternatives here and on the /6 forum but can't nail anything down.

I know the G.V. is $3K and some change but we'll be keepng this truck forever (it's my wife's~).
If you are running one of these, how was the install? I assume I'll need to have a crossmember fabbed
to hold it up there, but what else would need to be done?

Thanks. I've contacted American Powertrain and am waiting to hear back, it's only been one day. Also reached out to Silver Sport
transmissions but they've got no adapters to fit up to the slantie.

Cheers & I hope everyone's doing well.

My truck, '66 W200 Crewcab. Got any parts.?

If its the standard 8.75 Corporate axle, you might think about
finding a 2.76 or 2.94 gear for it. If you couldn't score a decent
chunk from a wrecking yard for a couple hundred, you could
still get a new one from an outfit like Randy's Ring & Pinion. :2cents
It would be way less expensive than redoing the tranny. :idea :2cents

I have a 8.75 (2.94) chunk( excellent condition),out of a '66 Belvedere (741), here in Houston . Sounds like you may have an early tapered axle. I'm not sure if the chunks are the same as the later flanged axles. Maybe someone can address that issue. PM if you are interested . Stored in a sealed 5 gallon paint bucket for the past 6 years. :Thumbsup

If you sit down with some of the online engine calculators, depending on your tire hieght, a 3.23 might be a easier choice. They are a dime a dozen, I had one in my Duster with a shorter tire than what you would be running and it was a great all around gear. Nice in town, and low enough revs on the hiway to be able to drive anywhere.
