Radiator

Post by BigBlockTrucks »

What are the differences between a big block radiator and a small block? Is there more surface area or more cores? Or is there a difference at all? I’m hoping to use the small block rad with a 440. It’s not crazy HP. Just a bone stock motor home engine from 1977.
Late 65 w 200.
Factory LU-2 winch.
Updates: 205 transfer case,4.10 gears, disc brake Dana 60 front with lock out hubs
440 repower in the works

3.73 geared rear

One difference is the hose connection locations.

There's a good deal more cooling capacity for the BB radiator.
I'm not certain how many cores deep they are.... but the overall
dimensions are bigger. I think you'll be woefully disappointed if
you try to use a SB radiator for more than the fact the inlet/outlet
locations are different. :pale

What are some options for a sufficient rad? Is a bolt in replacement available? Is there an aluminum alternative that fits with some mods? I’m not concerned about in and out. Top hose is center on engine and I have WP housings for either side.

I'd put an ad in the Parts Wanted section to see if anyone has a stock rad
you can have re-cored. I'm sure there are aluminum alternatives too... its
just a matter of investigating suppliers.... :idea :2cents

My 64 D100/440 has a Champion with minor modification. I had it in my 70 D200 with a 383. I went back to a stocker on the 70 and I like it better. Craig

Champion makes quality stuff. I have one in my 60 cooling a 383. You said with modification ,what was the rad originally made for?

There is more space in the 65. If spending for the aluminum rad it would look and work better if it took up all of the space available.
